Episode #2 – A Two Day Welsh Mountain Tour

This tour takes in some of the finest and most deserted mountain drives in the UK. It includes the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales and the Brecon Beacons region in the south of the country. These are roads famously driven by the likes of Evo and Top Gear – the road surfaces are some of the most exemplary in the UK and the light traffic make them a delight to drive.

Outline itinerary

5th Sept – The Snowdonia National Park

Arrive at Caffeine & Machine for 9am, where we have reserved entry and parking. We will stop for breakfast and conduct a briefing over tea and coffees. At around 10am we will head out on the road.

The first drive will take us west towards Snowdonia, initially on a scenic loop of the Shropshire Hills, then into the lesser known mid Wales mountain roads, between the villages of Llanbister and Llangedwyn, before arriving on the B4391. This road is probably our favourite driving road in Wales, which runs for some 30km, sweeping directly into the heart of Snowdonia.

We will drive a beautiful loop of the local mountain passes, including the Stone Mile and Crimea Pass before picking up the scenic A487, as it takes us south west to the coast and the fishing town of Aberystwyth. We then turn back inland, towards the Elan Valley region, where we will be based for the evening.

6th September – The Elan Valley & The Brecon Beacons

The incredible 72-square-mile Elan Valley in Powys is the perfect playground for cars and is voted among the top 10 greatest drives in Britain. The Elan Valley is famous for its network of Victorian dams and reservoirs created to supply the people of Birmingham, carrying water roughly 73 miles east to the Frankley Reservoir.

After completing a loop, we continue south on some of the finest B roads, such as the sweeping B4520, arriving into the Brecon Beacons where there is still time for two beautiful mountain roads before we turn east and cross the Seven Bridge.

The tour then ends in the southern Cotswolds in the village of Castle Combe, with a drink and refreshment at the Castle Inn. There is the possibility to spend a final evening in Castle Combe. Otherwise for those who prefer, guests can continue with onward or return journeys.
